Here I was in the Jungle – making friends in Costa Rica

When it comes to having a booth at a trade show or convention, it’s all about engaging the crowd – being social and making an impression – any impression that will be remembered.
If you can engage someone outside of their business personae and make them laugh – or squeal - then you can break the rhythm, the humdrum of the typical business conference.
When you can do that, everyone appreciates the change in pace and tells the story.
For example, who would have anticipated seeing a naked Tica, (Costa Rica girl) being hand-painted and sporting live snakes at a booth at the First Latin American Global Medicine and Wellness Congress April 26-28th in San Jose, Costa Rica?
It’s about making your booth stand out from the others, right? That’s what the owner of www.whitelillyspa.com thought. And apparently it worked. I’m blogging about it and I know other people have been forwarding pictures from the congress.
I was manning a booth I was sharing with CostaRicanMedicalcare (CRMC) when the President, Tim Morales, said to me “you’re not going to believe what your husband is doing.”
And sure enough, when I penetrated the gathering crowd, I saw that my husband Terry was draping a snake over the shoulders of willing passersby. It turned into a photo-opt event where people were bringing their friends to witness their squeals and record the moment with their cell phones.
Here’s a result I totally didn’t expect. Wherever we went following the Congress, someone would recognize Terry.
For example, from CIMA hospital to the Hotel Bougainvillea in Santo Domingo, front-desk staff welcomed Terry with a bright smile of recognition.
All of a sudden he was a friend and not a stranger; their excitement led to many enthusiastic explanations and introductions to management, and to a lot of special considerations.
You just can’t anticipate the serendipity of entertaining a crowd. And it doesn’t even have to be your booth. You just need to “play well” with others.
